Lane closures on US-23 to start Wednesday night

By Cindy Heflin

Starting Wednesday night, motorists driving between Ann Arbor and parts of Livingston County will have to deal with some road construction headaches.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will have lanes closed at various times from Lee Road near Brighton, south to Silver Lake Road in Green Oak Township for concrete repair, said spokeswoman Kari Arend. The work will extend between mile markers 55 and 59, Arend said.

Starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday, the left lane of southbound US-23 will be closed from Lee Road to Silver Lake Road between mile marker 59 and 55 until 5 a.m. Thursday. The left lane will be closed again in the same area starting at 8 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday.

Then, starting at 10 a.m. Friday, the left southbound lane will be closed again in the same area until Sunday afternoon. The left lane on the northbound sound of the freeway will also be closed at 8 p.m.

MDOT officials expect the southbound lane to reopen about 2 p.m. Sunday, Arend said. Construction crews will reopen the northbound lane by 5 a.m. Monday, she said.

To all of you complaining about the quality of our roads- and I'm one of you: Please vote to raise our taxes. Decent roads aren't free.

MDOT needs to improve this road. I have driven all over the state and everyone that lives in this area should be upset that I-75 north of Flint is getting a three lane expressway expanded to four lanes. (This is mainly for weekend travelers) How about the daily commuters in our area? How many times a week does US-23 have an accident? Way too many to count. MDOT needs to do more than just patch this road. MDOT needs to get this on their 5 year plan not the 30 year plan. While MDOTs at it how about widening US-23 from Dundee to Flint to three lanes, I-94 from US-23 to M-14 widened to three lanes and US-12 from Ypsilanti to Saline to a boulevard. All of these road are under the control of MDOT, the County Road Commission might be repairing the roads, but MDOT holds the money. How about taking care of the real problems not pushing them aside?

Fairly clear why 23 is being allowed to deteriorate and why it won't ever be expanded to the greatly-needed three lanes. Ann Arbor hates suburban sprawl and wants pretty choo-choo trains. Screw the economy.

Please do a story on why every summer US 23 between Ann Arbor and Brighton is down to one lane. Did a contractor or MDOT screw up last year or the year before? Why don't they make it three lanes wide? This has been an on going issue and it never seems to get resolved. We Demand Answers!

"You can thank Governor Granholm for no third lane. In 2005 DOT was ready to add it, and Governor Granholm came out with a edict that stopped DOT from adding new lanes to existing roads. " I guess that's why there has been an ongoing project to widen I-94 to 3 lanes in each direction west of Kalamazoo? Once again, just makin' up, DonBee. Good Night and Good Luck

xmo - You can thank Governor Granholm for no third lane. In 2005 DOT was ready to add it, and Governor Granholm came out with a edict that stopped DOT from adding new lanes to existing roads. The money was there at the time and USDOT had approved the addition.

I suggest you get an up-to-date map. Yours does not show the notorious maze at Lee just West of US 23 (multiple interlocking roundabouts), nor the reconfiguration on the East side. West of the highway, it does not show the road paralleling it that extends both North and South from the Silver Lake exit.

This isn't exactly new news. It's been going on for a while now. Plus there are the bridge replacement projects north and south of 96. Some underway and some to come soon. I think they are doing the north two first and then will move to the south ones. They seem to be making good progress on the Hyne Rd one.
