A lockdown was lifted this afternoon at five Ypsilanti schools and a central administration building, Ypsilanti Public Schools spokeswoman Emma Jackson said.
The schools were put on lockdown shortly before 10 a.m. after a West Middle School faculty member reported seeing a man with a "long gun" in a wooded area near the school, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said.
Deputies have identified a man believed to be involved and are working to locate him this afternoon.
Ypsilanti High School, West Middle School, Estabrook Elementary School, Chapelle Elementary School, the Regional Career Technical Center and the central administration building next to the high school were locked down.
The schools are near each other, and the lockdown impacted about 2,400 students, Jackson said.
A phone call with a pre-recorded message was made to parents of students in the buildings to notify them of the lockdown, school officials said.
