Low-income residents in Michigan have until Sept. 30 to apply for home heating credits

State Rep. Mark Ouimet, R-Scio Township, issued a reminder about the upcoming deadline to apply.

"Home heating bills tend to fluctuate every year and can especially affect people living on fixed incomes, such as senior citizens," he said. "I encourage people who think they may qualify to learn more about the program and get their applications in as soon as possible."

Eligible customers must have their homestead in Michigan, must own or rent the home in which they live, and for the standard allowance, their income must fall within certain limits.

Special exemptions are available for residents who are deaf or blind, have a disability or are age 65 or older. The credits are processed by the Michigan Department of Treasury.
