Man arrested after fight outside The Fifth Quarter in Ann Arbor

By Lee Higgins

A 23-year-old Ypsilanti Township man was arrested after a fight early Saturday outside The Fifth Quarter, Ann Arbor police said.

The man was among a large group of people fighting outside the club about 2 a.m., police said.

The 23-year-old suffered facial injuries, a police report said.

He was attempting to hit other people and refused to put his hands behind his back as officers were taking him into custody, according to the report.

Prosecutors will review the case to determine charges.

This place is a dump and the owner is dragging down other places in town that he is associated with. Fine the club, or even better shut the place down!

The Fifth Quarter is accurately represented in this article. Each time I have been there, there has been a fight outside upon the place closing. As other posters have pointed out, fighting is a problem with all bars in the area. However, I have witnessed many more fights at the Fifth Quarter than any other establishment in Ann Arbor. The reason I stopped going to the Fifth Quarter is because I was randomly punched on the face while walking out of the bathroom. That also has never happened at other bars. Enough said.

I've also seen huge fights bordoring on riots in front of Rick's...But I dont see those incidents being reported, and I dont see anybody calling for them to lose their liquor license. So why is the fith quarter being targeted? Is it because there is a high number of african americans? or is it because it's so close to main street where the 'grown up' establishments are? In other words, if there's a fight at a campus bar, it doesn't get attention...But if there's a fight at a bar in the downtown district, it's front page news.

@rusty shackelford Are you really trying to say that at most bars there aren't women dressed scantily and people acting like something they aren't all in the name of trying to get the attention of the opposite sex? Perhaps you should visit a bar/club more often. The crowds are typically the same, sure maybe the income level and racial make up are different but at its core the crowd is still made up of men seeking women and women seeking men. Add I agree with the person after you who said that at any bar you can find rowdy crowds at closing time. Also, who cares if the man is from Ypsi Township, A2 is a college town thereby making it a common thing to not be from there.

I think Rusty was trying to imply that people in A2 don't act like savages. The offenders must be from out of town- it's the only logical explanation. The bottom line is: if Wolfgang is present, the atmosphere is likely to get out of control. I can't even count the amount of times I've been drunk dialed at 3 a.m. by him.

I don't think it matters what bar it is, there will always be rowdy people hanging around outside at closing time. I've noticed that Necto and especially Scorekeepers can be just as bad. I haven't witnessed any fights outside those bars but you still have to be careful driving around the area as drunk people love treating the streets like a sidewalk. (I may or not be guilty of being one of those people back in college). @ Rusty: I think people from out of town are just as likely to go to Necto, or other bars in town, as they are The Fifth Quarter, so I'm not really sure that has anything to do with it.

It's sad how some facial injuries are more important that others. I guess it only makes national news if you're a professional golfer, Wolfgang.

Chief Inspector Gadget personally told me that this place was the bomb. Quit hatin'.

there you are Edward! How did this not make the National news? He had facial injuries for Pete's sake. Although I want to question under what circumstances Joseph was told to stay away from that place by a county prosecutor, I respect him for looking out for his fellow Ann Arborites. Cafe Oz was at this location and weren't they shut down because they were having the same problems?

There are scantily clad girls and wannabe bigshots at every bar and club, no matter the location. The problem here is more likely alcohol and those who don't know their limits and how to control themselves. This kind of thing happens at every bar and club.

LouisGR...I don't see a color of clientel at this place, a thug is a thug...no matter the race, religion, etc...it is a hotbed of trouble brewing...from the girls that are barely dressed to the wannabe bigshots vying for their attention...I live 2 blocks away and can tell you, it's not a place I would allow my niece to go to when she visits. We've got a couple of clubs downtown that are nothing but a big problem...and nothing will be done until there is a tragedy of a grand scale.

This dump is a magnet for trouble. I say enough already. Pull their liquor license.

Hey Joseph, wish I could have seen your first post. That place is a magnet for crime and the city should just pull its liquor license already. I know some people try to say that there's a bias because the club has a more african american clientele but that's just pc bull. If that much crime is coming out of one place, it should be shut down, period.

Hi Ed, I am not sure why my comment was removed. I was stating my opinion of the place. It can be verified that a great number of the prosecutor's office court cases have originated from The Fifth Quarter. The county prosecutor personally told me to stay away from there. I have gone there and observed several things that one can conclude to be dangerous to others. i.e (how the bouncers treat the patrons). Ed, i am a resident of Ann Arbor who does frequent many bars/clubs locally. I am just concerned about the well-being of my fellow Ann Arborites. Thank you Ed.

Well, of course he was...stop fighting just because the cops show up? Don't be silly...his manhood was on the line here...and I'm sure alcohol was not a factor...
