Man charged in assault at Liberty Plaza, Ann Arbor police say

By Lee Higgins

A homeless man is accused of cutting another man's arm and back at Liberty Plaza on Wednesday night because that man is dating his ex-girlfriend, Ann Arbor police said.

Ronnie Paige, 57, is at the Washtenaw County Jail, charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, county court records show.

He was arraigned Thursday and is being held on $5,000 bond with the right to post 10 percent, jail officials said this morning.

The 41-year-old victim called 911 to report the 10:30 p.m. attack at the small park at the intersection of East Liberty and South Division streets, police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said.

It's unclear what object Paige allegedly used in the assault, Bush said.

The victim declined medical attention but said he would seek treatment on his own, police said.

I just posted my discontent for Liberty Plaza "homeless" in another story in the community portion of this site. I agree with Rice and have signed up for my concealed firearm class. I'm fed up with my girlfriend being harassed everytime she takes our dog out. I've called the police on 4 occasions within the last 30 days and either they do something or the citizens will take back what is righfully theirs. Also, these people are not homeless, they live in subsidized housing across and down the street from the park. I've seen several drug deals, consumption of liquor, fights, etc...and this is a city park where tax dollars are going?

WOW look at that rap sheet? Where are the people that usually argue that the criminal record resulted in his unfortunate circumstances rather than his original and continuing poor choices causing it? I love those chicken and egg debates.

Looks like he isn't homeless any more. Now he's got a roof and three squares a day!

@ Beachbaby - I think that's just OTIS being it's old flakey self. Notoriously for going in and out of working. I got his record with picture an hour ago, now it claims there's no one mathcing the info. I would try again in a couple minutes.

Found him on OTIS but didn't see a picture. By his description, he sounds like a panhandler who got very aggressive with me outside at Real Seafood--came right up to the table to the point i had to back away. Decided I prefer eating inside after that.

Davidian - I don't see how this somehow proves that it failed. How many people with homes have been arrested lately? Lots. I'm familiar with the guy. He's a creep. He's been a creep for years. He doesn't represent the "homeless", he represents the creepy aggressive panhandlers that frequent downtown (Ronnie and Cotton are constantly harassing young women).

The progressive social experiment of welcoming homeless people to Ann Arbor with open arms has failed.

Hey Ann Arbor Police, maybe now would be a good time to stop ignoring the area between Main St and State street. You realize that people actually live and work and play outside of the two main streets, don't you?

What the heck do I have to be afraid of? I stay alert and can defend myself. I don't need to enjoy being slashed as I hope for rescue.

@uawisok...ever walk by that park when it's dark? I don't care how bad you might think you are, you're outnumbered by the "park guests". It's not fear, but being aware of your surroundings that make people want to protect themselves, me included. Bet you don't live downtown, do you?

If you want to live your life totally unable to defend yourself from such attacks, enjoy!

"Armed and crazy homeless people..reason #178 to practice concealed carry." If that's the kind of life you want to live by being controlled by fear, enjoy!!

Check OTIS for his picture. He's a well known nuisance in downtown Ann Arbor.

Any pictures of the perpetrator, or the girlfriend?
