Ann Arbor police say Fred Brooks of Monroe set the pickup on fire June 11 outside an urgent care facility near the intersection of East Stadium Boulevard and South Industrial Highway. Detectives say Brooks hoped the fire would distract employees at the facility so he could attempt to commit another crime, but they have not offered specifics.

Police said Brooks used papers and a lighter to set fire to the pickup, which belonged to an employee at the facility.

Brooks was arrested Monday and was arraigned today on a charge of arson of personal property valued at more than $1,000 but less than $20,000.

Brooks, who was evaluated at a psychiatric unit at the University of Michigan Hospital after the incident, has a preliminary hearing on the felony charge July 7. Jail officials said he was being held on 10 percent of $5,000 bond, and had not posted bond by this evening.
