Troopers safely stop man with medical condition driving erratically
State troopers surrounded a car traveling erratically on westbound I-94 Wednesday night, safely bringing it to a halt as the man driving exited at Ann Arbor-Saline Road, a news release said.
The 58-year-old man, who was suffering from a medical problem that caused him to lose control of the car, was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township in stable condition, the release said.
Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department dispatchers received 911 calls reporting a reckless driver on I-94 in Ypsilanti Township.
The car was traveling along the shoulder to pass vehicles and hitting the median wall on the interstate about 8 p.m., the release said.
It was traveling about 60 miles per hour, holding up traffic, according to the release.
State police troopers attempted to stop the vehicle at I-94 and US-23 in Pittsfield Township, but the driver did not pull over. He continued for 5 miles, the release said.
Troopers pulled up to the car and saw that the man was not wearing a seat belt. They identified the registered owner of the car and suspected that the man might be medically distressed, according to the release.
Troopers surrounded the car as it exited the highway, creating a "rolling roadblock" and slowly bringing it to a halt, the release said.
No vehicles were damaged and no one was injured during the stop, the release said.
The man, who was suffering from complications after receiving medical treatment, was turned over to paramedics.

Sometimes we forget that our law enforcement officers really do things other than arrest people and put them in jail. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all.

What an awesome job by law enforcement! What could have been a disastrous situation wound up with a happy outcome. I'm sure many folks' holiday will be a lot brighter because of this effort. Well done!
