Man killed in car-train crash leaves behind four children

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Rudy Luna, who was killed Friday when his sport utility vehicle was struck by a train in Augusta Township, leaves behind four children 18 years old and younger, his uncle said today.

Rudy Luna of Willis worked for L & W Inc., a car parts manufacturer in Belleville, Luis Luna of Wyandotte said.

Luna was born in Michigan but moved to Tennessee with his mother. He had moved to Michigan a couple of years ago and then went back to Tennessee, finally returning to Michigan again earlier this year, Luis Luna said.

Police said Rudy Luna was traveling south on McKean Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at the railroad crossing. His 2002 Nissan Pathfinder was truck by a Norfolk-Southern freight train.

Funeral services will be in Tennessee, Luis Luna said.

It is an easy mistake to make, exacerbated by a poor crossing design. We all make driving mistakes, but trains cannot respond as other drivers do, preventing an accident. While there is a "stop ahead" sign, it can be mistaken for the intersection of Willis Road. The cross bucks are gray, matching the sky. There are no pavement markings since it is a dirt road. To actually see if a train is coming, a driver needs to turn his read way past 90 degrees, to an "8:00" position or further, as the tracks are at an angle to the road. The railroad company and county road commission did this crossing on the cheap. If they had added additional warning signs on BOTH sides of the road at the crossing, including the colored (red) stop sign, this accident might never have occurred. For a smaller amount of money, since the tracks cross at such a severe angle lights could have been added. At the very least, additional signs should be here, but there is only the minimum,. And they are insufficient.
