Man killed in weekend crash is identified

By Lee Higgins

A man killed in a crash early Sunday in Salem Township has been identified as 20-year-old Brennen Eugene Smith of South Lyon, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies said Smith was traveling north on Dixboro Road in a 2003 Ford pickup truck when he lost control of the vehicle about 12:52 a.m., and it struck a tree. He was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near 6 Mile Road.

A 20-year-old male passenger was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police are investigating whether alcohol and speed are factors in the crash.

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Thomas Pennington did not immediately have further details this morning.

I live in the area and unfortunately this type of driving happens ALL the time! The driver's put us all at risk with the fast dirt road driving! Please don't drink and drive....your family will miss you.

Sad news. This reminds me of a friend I lost this spring on M-14 and sheldon. Only he was the passenger ejected and dead on the side of the highway. Drinking and driving, no seat belts. same story, same ending. God Bless the family and friends.

Ejected from vehicle! When will people learn? So sad, just used seat belts and increase the odds of survival! My heart and prayers go out to the family.
