Man killed in crash involving three cars in Ann Arbor
See updated story: Fatal crash on west side of Ann Arbor resulted from driver suffering medical condition, police say
One man was killed and another man was injured in a traffic accident involving three vehicles on the city's west side Thursday evening, according to the Ann Arbor Fire Department.
Battalion Chief Robert Vogel said firefighters were called to the scene of the accident at Dexter Avenue and North Maple Road about 7:30 p.m. and found a man was pinned in one of the vehicles and not breathing.
Vogel said firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the man from the vehicle, but he was declared dead at the scene.
Huron Valley Ambulance transported another man to the University of Michigan Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Vogel said.
The accident remains under investigation and additional information was not available on Thursday evening.

Tragic story, RIP to the guy that passed away. As for the other guy had a medical condition that caused this accident it wasn't reckless driving or drunk driving or anything like that, this was a complete accident. I'm sure he is going to suffer with the fact that he killed someone so we should pray for him as well as the victim. Sad story all around!

According to the WDIV article - "Police say a 48-year-old Ann Arbor resident suffered a medical issue and passed out while driving causing him to run a red light. That's when he hit and killed the other driver. The 48-year-old was uninjured." Many things could cause this sad result, the truth will eventually be known. This is so unfortunate for all concerned.

I saw a bunch of police and fire trucks going by my house so I turned on my police scanner. I was so surprised when they said it was a 3 car accident on Jackson and Maple and that 2 people were pinned in their car! One dispatcher said that one of them was in cardiac arrest....I was so sad to hear that something so horrible happened so close to my home:(

The strip between the sidewalk and curb IS part of the right of way.

johnnya2, what is the private property in that case. Is it the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street, or Veteran's Park? Those both seem a lot like public property to me.

I thought a doctor had to call time of death. If so, how could the victim be declared dead at the scene?

When injuries are not compatible with life, then time of death can be called.

paramedics are 1st to assess the scene. if there's no signs of life (or it's obvious they are gone- no pulse, breathing, etc) then the victim is left at the scene for investigation. i unfortunately had a close friend that this happened to involving a car accident as well.

I believe a report on channel 4 this morning said the speeding driver had a medical emergency and passed out.

What really scares me is that anyone can be at the wrong place at the wrong time - and be suddenly erased from life. And I know it's hopeless but I wish the term "collision" would be used in place of "accident" in such reports. We don't know that what took place here happened accidentally (unintentionally implies there was no intention to create a hazardous condition).

I'm not surprised the witness accounts tell of such high speed. I came across the scene after the fact, and for an intersection of two 35MPH roads I was amazed at the degree of damage to the vehicles and the area over which debris was spread. It was one of those sorts of things you look at and immediately know it's not going to be a good story.
