Man leaves 2-year-old in car as he runs from deputies in Ypsilanti Township

By Lee Higgins

A man ditched a car after a short police pursuit Wednesday in Ypsilanti Township, leaving a 2-year-old child inside, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said.

The 37-year-old Sumpter Township man was arrested after he ran from deputies. He was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail, a sheriff's department incident summary said.

The child, who was not injured, was turned over to her mother.

Deputies responded to a home on Grove Road near Ide Street after receiving a report of a family dispute about 8 p.m., the summary said. They learned the man had left with the child. Deputies located the car the man was driving, but he refused to stop, the summary said.

He ultimately stopped in a parking lot on Prospect Road, leaving the child inside, according to the summary.

The case has been forwarded to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office for review.
