An Ann Arbor man is accused of making up an elaborate story about being kidnapped at gunpoint from his apartment in May, then forced to withdraw money from banks and held overnight at an apartment complex.
Damian Jonathan Adams, 39, of Pear Street, is charged with filing a false report of a felony, Washtenaw County court records show.
Adams, who is free on a personal recognizance bond, is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. today.
Ann Arbor police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said it's unclear why Adams made up the story.
According to Bush, Adams told police he was kidnapped by two Ypsilanti men at his apartment on May 9, and was forced to withdraw money from banks in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. He claimed he was held at an apartment complex somewhere in Washtenaw County, Bush said.
Adams told police he escaped after a fight with the kidnappers the next morning, police said.
Detectives investigated the case for several days before determining Adams' story didn't check out, Bush said.
If convicted, Adams faces up to four years in prison.
