Ypsilanti police investigate animal cruelty complaint and discover marijuana growing operation
Ypsilanti police are seeking a 29-year-old man after officers discovered at least 10 marijuana plants inside his home Thursday while they were investigating an animal cruelty complaint, reports said.
The man's girlfriend told police she returned to the Bell Street home Wednesday to find her 9-month-old dog with broken legs, its teeth knocked out and face swollen, a police incident log said.
The woman also told police her boyfriend had choked her and ripped her clothing Monday, the log said.
Officers conducted a search warrant at the home and found 10 to 15 marijuana plants, acting Police Chief Paul DeRidder said.
No evidence of animal cruelty was found, and police haven't located the dog, so that investigation continues, DeRidder said.
At one point, police spoke to the man on the phone, and he denied beating the dog or his girlfriend, DeRidder said.
The woman came forward Thursday after one of her relatives spoke to police about the two alleged beatings, the log said.
Police did not have information on the breed, gender or name of the dog.
