Man stopped for traffic violation shoots himself

By Cole Bertsos

Sheriff's officials are investigating the circumstances of a traffic stop in Ypsilanti Township that resulted in a suicide attempt early Saturday morning.

After a vehicle was stopped for having a deliberately obscured license plate while in the area of Ecorse Road and Hayes Street, the driver ran to the 400 block of Woodlawn Avenue, police said.

After deputies approached the individual, the man pulled out a gun. Deputies then talked to him, according to a news release, but the person then shot himself.

The person was transported to St. Joseph hospital in Ypsilanti and currently is in intensive care.

The case still is under investigation and the Sherriff's office said there will be more information released once it becomes available.

If you, or someone you know, is having suicidal thoughts or would like to speak with someone, call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Help is available 24 hours a day.

Would be nice if they ncluded a map or location for context. I was not certain where Ecorse Rd and Hayes Ave were (are they in Ann Arbor? Ypsi? Ypsi Township?). I know this is a minor detail compared to the attempted suicide, but it would be nice to have a few more details. The first line could read: Sheriff's officials are investigating the circumstances of a traffic stop *** in Ypsilanti Township (I believe) *** that resulted in a suicide attempt early Saturday morning. where I have inserted the information between the ***s.

http://www.metanoia.org/suicide/ This is more helpful than anything I've ever seen on the topic of suicide, for the suicidal and their friends and family alike.

The WCSD deputies need to be commended for their handling of this difficult situation. AAcom please post some other community mental health services. A suicide hotline is of no use to people experiencing serious mental health problems.

How is the Kiwanis Warm the Children "related" to the story of the guy who shot himself?

Elaine, I don't think that anyone actually chooses the "related stories." It's part of the computer software that publishes the articles onto the website - it just looks for similar words in recent articles.

People that are focusing on stress, etc., read the story: "After a vehicle was stopped for having a deliberately obscured license plate..." People who deliberately obscure their license plate have something to hide. More behind this story.

Wow. The deputies involved demonstrated some serious restraint. In a great many jurisdictions, pulling a gun in the presence of a deputy results in a swift and fatal conclusion.
