Man talks his way out of robbery in Ann Arbor after suspecting gun is plastic

By Lee Higgins

A man apparently talked his way out of a robbery Tuesday night after suspecting the gun held to his head was plastic, an Ann Arbor police report said.

The 20-year-old victim was removing something from the trunk of his car in the 3400 block of Oakwood Street when he felt an object at the back of his head, the report said.

The man had seen three teenage boys in the area and had turned his back to them.

One man said, "Give me everything you got," according to the report.

The victim closed the trunk, the report said.

As the object was removed from the back of his head, the victim heard a "clicking noise," and suspected it was plastic gun.

He said to the teenager, "Are you serious? Do you really want to do this?"

The victim didn't give the teenager anything. Twenty seconds passed, then the teenager walked away on the sidewalk, the report said.

The teenager looked at the victim, pulled his shirt up over part of his face, then appeared to put a handgun in the front of his pants, according to the report.

All three teenagers walked east on Oakwood Street after the 11:10 p.m. incident.

The report did not contain a detailed description of the teenagers.

One day those teens are going to try this on a person with a concealed carry permit... and it may be the last mistake they ever make. There has been a rash of these lately, it's only a matter of time before someone is shot, possibly killed. These kids better wise up fast.

Sometime - in the next few months, perhaps - one of these young thugs will have a transaction with a hooner who has a CCW and a G-U-N and methinks someone will be D-E-A-D. Jist a thought; probably will never happen in Tree Town cos yins hooners dint pack legal heat. Right?

Nice work on the part of the victim. I bet the teens were scared after the victim didn't just rollover and give them his money.

cinnabar-you are right on anselm- your thinking is the reason this crap happens. The "lay down" philosophy and political correctness is what has gotten us into the lawless mess we currently find ourselves in. It is a proven fact that those who are confident and willing to defend themselves are less likely to be victims. The citizenry is responsible for the condition of our society. Take a stand and quit knuckling under to the path of least resistance. Freedom is not easy. Nothing worth it ever is!!!!

So your sugesting we lay down and be victims? I would think if we all fought back like our lives depended on it, things would change for the better. The above poster is the reason criminals have no fear.

I know the young man who was mugged showed great courage, but it might also be described as rashness. The best thing is to part with the money (I know that SOUNDS cowardly, but suppose the gun HAD been real!) The outcome would have been tragic. I'm glad it came out as it did, but I don't think this "courageous" behavior is to be emulated.
