Five employees of the Washtenaw County Road Commission, including Managing Director Steve Puuri, retired on Dec. 20, adding to nine employees who retired two weeks ago.

Puuri, of Webster Township, began his career with the Road Commission in February 1987 and served for almost 25 years.

“He distinguished himself as one of the leaders among road professionals in Michigan though his active participation on many County Road Association of Michigan committees,” according to information from the Road Commission.

Puuri was also a member of the Governor’s Traffic Safely Advisory Commission, the Michigan County Road Commission Self-Insurance Pool Board and the Washtenaw Area Transportation Study Committee.

Also retiring were Amy E. Edwards, a receptionist and engineering secretary of Pinckney, after 24 years; and Bruce Douglas Jensen, of Jackson, following almost 22 years as an engineering technician.

Rodney Naebeck of Lodi Township retired after 26 years and 11 months as a heavy truck driver and Sandra K. Riddle, of Chelsea, retired after 13 years working as a payroll clerk for the Road Commission.

Roy Townsend will take over as the new managing director with Puuri’s retirement, but he will retain his title of county road engineer and Sheryl Siddall is expected to take over as the director of engineering.
