Marijuana seized during separate traffic stops in Ypsilanti

By Lee Higgins

A man and woman were arrested and released this morning after Ypsilanti police seized bags of marijuana during separate traffic stops, a police incident log said.

Police stopped a 27-year-old woman near the intersection of East Forest Avenue and Dwight Street about 12:05 a.m. after her vehicle ran a red light, the log said.

Officers smelled marijuana in her car and asked if they could search it. She consented, and five baggies of marijuana and a scale were seized, the log said.

Police stopped a 19-year-old man near the intersection of North Prospect Street and Thomas Street about 2:02 a.m. Officers found six bags of marijuana on him, the log said.

The two have been released as the investigation continues.

I think commenters are ignoring the scales and multiiple baggies.I think MJ laws are stupid but not quite as stupid as carrying scales,pre-packaged pot while smoking ans running red lights. @Brigel what on earth do billonares have anything to do with this?

"How about not having a illegal substance in the car in the first place. How about maybe following the law. How about not being under the influence of any substance and enjoying life to the fullest without the aid of chemicals and alcohol. Just a thought..." Could work. Then agian I'm an American so i like to rail against laws that are unjest and a rediculus waste of taxes and time. Funny, I wonder how mnay people told the slaves "Just deal with it." Or told Women "You don't need to vote don't worry about it." Or "you don't need to have that pesky right of pro choice." I guess it's just a shame our government is set up to change laws that get outdated eh?

I alos once had a cop tell me they have smelled alcohol from a driver with their windows open as they were following him. Stuff you never think about. "I've got advice for you: Don't drive with weed in your car, problem solved. If you don't have it in a glass jar they are going to smell that stinky stuff, guaranteed." So then can I at least transport it in a glass jar in my car? You've got some strict rules. How am I to get it under my couch if I can't drive it home?

You're going to sort out the legal technicalities of a police search with your lawyer at $400 an hour? Don't smoke weed and drive. Don't have it in the car. Then when they search your car for whatever excuse they give you the only thing the cop will be telling you is "have a nice day, sir"

ffej440 is correct if an officer asks to search your car you can say you dont consent to the search but you cant refuse it. You have to be very clear that you do not consent to the search. You have to be clear and blunt, because if you say anything that could be construed as consent they will put in the police report that you consented. After you specifically tell the officer NO, they still have the right to search your car but they have to put in the police report that you did not consent to it. After that its in your lawerys hands.

I've got advice for you: Don't drive with weed in your car, problem solved. If you don't have it in a glass jar they are going to smell that stinky stuff, guaranteed. You're too stoned to even recognize the smell. That's why you got pulled over in the first place, you were high and ran a stop sign. Get your head on straight and keep the weed where it belongs, under your couch.

"I wonder how many people get searched for "Odor"?" Ha, I don't know around here but it happens every week on "Cops." Probable casue and all that stuff is so over used it's amazing. basically the way it's used now is if you say no to the search that's suspicious giving them the right to search you...crazy.

If a police officer smells some pot, he's going to say he has probable casue wheather he does or not. You say no to his request, he's going to search it, and you just deal with it in court. That's how it works.

Good luck saying no to a search. A cop can say you were weaving- then once stopped say they small Mary Jane- You will be getting searched. If you refuse you will get searched anyways, probable cause from the smell to suspect driving under the influence. I wonder how many people get searched for "Odor"? It has been pulled on me,nothing ever found. Its a free pass for the police to search any car any time.

If an officer asks for permission to search your property, you DO have the right to say no. Now, the smell may have been probable cause to search without consent, but I am not exactly clear on how that aspect of the law works.
