Men out target-shooting in Northfield Township say shots were fired at them

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Five men who were target-shooting on a property in Northfield Township say someone shot at them, township police said.

The men said they never saw the shooter, or where the shots may have been fired from, by they heard the bullets go by, township police said.

The men said it occurred as they were target shooting on a property south of Five Mile on March 21, police said Monday.

Police said the area the men reported the shots came from was "extremely wet and swampy due to recent snow melts." The responding officer couldn't locate anyone or a location where the shots came from, police said.

djm12652 - The simplest explanation is usually correct. I obviously don't claim to know for sure, but would it make more sense for a stray ricochet to graze them, or an active shooter that for some reason plotted to shoot at these people in the middle of nowhere at the same time they were target shooting?

tdw> the final say from one who ALWAYS has the most informed ideas and will tell you that because of his former employ in public service. What is your final deduction investigator?

Yep sounds like someone was targeting these poor souls! Probably another militia group! Lock your doors and pull your shades! Maybe it was a swat team! I say all the above tongue in cheek! While I basically said it could only be a ricochet if they were using rifles. They could have been getting ready for turkey season checking the patterns on their guns. In which case the ricochet theory goes out the window.I am skeptical, but like the rest here this is merely speculation since none of us has enough facts to even make an educated guess. And I say this as someone that has been using guns and hunting for over 50 years, Most snipers don't hang out in the woods waiting for a random target.

djm12652 I think it's just more of the same old thing people make comments when they have no idea what they're talking about

I don't see how a "ricochet" could have occurred unless the 5 men target shooting were in a very, very small area surrounded by either trees and/or structures. If they were out in the open target shooting surrounded by a forested area, a ricochet off of a tree that would travel any discernable distance had to come from a high power rifle...just doesn't make any sense to someone that sold weapons for quite a few years as well as been shooting target practice for almost 40 years. Just doesn't make sense to me....

I would be interested in knowing how much experience these guys have when in comes to shooting. Ricochet would be the most likely scenario if they were using rifles and not shotguns. Did they here more than one bullet whiz by? Looks like with the militia mania going on they thought they might add to it.
