Michigan Democratic Party's LGBT Caucus to hold anti-bullying conference in February
The Michigan Democratic Party’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Caucus will host an anti-bullying conference for all students on Feb. 19 at the Ypsilanti Library, 5577 Whittaker Road.
The conference will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will discuss ways to end bullying against all students, according to a press release.
The conference will feature speakers including former state Rep. Alma Wheeler-Smith, Washtenaw County prosecuting attorney Brian Mackie, Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton and University of Michigan Student Assembly President Christopher Armstrong.
Armstrong, chair of the LGBT Caucus Phil Volk and U-M College Democrats leader Brendan Campbell are co-chairing the conference.
Armstrong received national media attention after being targeted by former Michigan assistant attorney general Andrew Shirvell for promoting what Shirvell called a “radical homosexual agenda.” Shirvell ran a blog and showed up at numerous social functions and student assembly meetings to make his claims.
According to the release, the caucus would like to see the state Legislature pass an enumerated anti-bullying law that protects all students, but specifies protection for minority, disabled and LGBT students. The state does not currently have any anti-bullying legislation.
“While bullying can happen to any student, statistics show that students who are members of minority communities are more likely to be bullied,” the release stated.
The conference is free to attend and is open to all members of the public.
