Michigan Department of Education seeks more time to meet No Child Left Behind standards
The state of Michigan is among a number of states seeking permission from the federal government to get more time to meet student proficiency standards under No Child Left Behind, according to a report in The Detroit News.
No Child Left Behind requires 100 percent of students to be proficient on state assessments by 2014, a standard that state education officials from around the country are calling impossible. The Michigan Department of Education is raising the proficiency scores for state assessments in a move they believe will accurately reflect students' college readiness but state officials believe it will cause an initial drop in the number of students labeled proficient.
According to the report, estimates from Michigan's education department say the number of third-grade students considered proficient on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program would drop from 95 percent in 2009 to 34 percent next year under the new testing standards.
A number of states have requested waivers from the 2014 requirements and some states, such as Idaho, have been granted permission to keep their proficiency standards at the same point for the third straight year, according to a report in Education Week's Politics K-12. Idaho officials actually told the U.S. Department of Education and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan the state would ignore No Child Left Behind, regardless of being granted a waiver.

What a joke "education" is. It's more like a "jobs program".

You know what would be even better than more time on this disaster is to get rid of this standards garbage entirely and start figuring out how to teach properly.....
