Michigan residents pushed to comment on federal Asian carp strategy
Michigan officials are urging state residents to comment before the Friday evening deadline on the draft of the federal Asian carp strategy.
The Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework is a draft plan released earlier this year by federal officials to try to keep the invasive fish species out of the Great Lakes. Comments emailed to carpcomments@gmail.com on or before Friday will be reviewed and considered by the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee.

Among strategies already being used are electronic barriers to keep the fish from swimming through Chicago waterways into Lake Michigan.
“Michigan citizens and organizations who care deeply about protecting the Great Lakes from the threat posed by the potential invasion of Asian carp should take note of this critical opportunity to speak out on the proposed federal response,” Lt. Gov. John Cherry said in a statement. “The state of Michigan must continue to use every forum available to call for stronger protections than are outlined in the draft framework."
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court denied a request made by the state of Michigan to temporarily close Chicago-area canals as the court considers "whether to dive into the interstate lawsuit over invasive Asian carp," the New York Times reported.

We should exclude invasive species from the Great Lakes, but don't let the circus about these fish take the focus off other more significant impacts, like the chemical wastes pouring into the lakes, and all the other invasive species that are getting hauled into the lakes by commercial shipping. There are good reasons to think that these fish do not put the recreational fishing industry in peril. Here is a letter to the editor of the Lansing State Journal by an UM ecologist and a fish biologist. http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20100222/OPINION02/2220304/Smith-Vandermeer-Mich.-don-t-over-react-about-carp-in-the-lakes

I have heard the Asian Carp cannot survive in the Great Lakes as they are a warm water species. Is this true?

I don't know how long this link will work because I think it cycles with the UM Record update, but it shows a picture of an Asian carp. I have heard about them a lot lately, but really didn't have any idea how big they get. http://www.ur.umich.edu/update/

Why not over fish the carp and turn them into fertilizer and cat food!

I want to stop the carp too. BUT -. The fish eggs are released by the thousands - the tiny eggs attach to bird feet - birds fly from rivers to the great lakes - the eggs wash off and the Carp enter the lakes. I have read that the eggs do not survive for long periods of time out of the water - and that un-fertilized eggs die rather quickly, but.... Does anyone know if Carp have migrated to smaller isolated lakes near the Mississippi River?

On the positive side Michigan could become the Asian Carp capital of the world. Processing plants could sprout up all over the state creating much needed jobs. Don't worry people they ain'ts a coming, trust the Feds plan.
