Milan High School Top Scholars

Milan High School held its 2012 graduation ceremonies June 3, 2 p. m. in the high school gymnasium. The class included 232 graduates.
Parents: Melanie and Vernon Garrett
Activities and Awards: Mock trial team (state finalist),CERT, varsity softball (district champs regional champs quarterfinals, semifinals, state runner up) National Honor Society, all state academic team
Plans After Graduation: Adraya will attend Grand Valley University to double major in psychology and anthropology and hopefully become a child psychologist or archaeologist.
Anna Hargrove
Activities and Awards: Anna was a member of the National Honor Society, Community Emergency Response Team, Student Council and was one of the senior class officers. She was a four year member of the varsity swim team and was voted captain her senior year. She holds the 100 yard backstroke school record and was a part of the 200 and 400 freestyle relays which won state championships her sophomore and junior years, both of which hold school records. Anna was also a four year member and starter on the varsity softball team, and was voted captain her senior year. She was also a part of the 2011 Softball State Runner-Up team her junior team. Anna has also helped coach the Milan Middle School Swim Team as an assistant coach.
Plans After Graduation: Anna will attend either the University of Toledo or Olivet College in pursuit of risk management or pharmacy. She will continue her swimming career when she attends college.
Laura Heath
Parents: Gary and Linda Heath
Activities and Awards: Laura was a member of the National Honor Society. She was a four-year member of the varsity soccer team as well as a senior captain. In addition to being on the soccer team, Laura participated in basketball and cross country. Her sophomore year, Laura qualified for the FFA state competition.
Plans After Graduation: Laura will be playing soccer at Taylor University.
Lucas Karr
Activities and Awards: Luke was a four year member of the Baseball, Basketball, and Baseball programs at Milan High School. He was voted captain of the football team his senior year. In his sophomore year, he became a member of the School Emergency Response Team, as well as being inducted into the National Honor Society. Luke was a part of the German Exchange at the high school his senior year, and participates in his church mission trips outside of school and sports.
Plans After Graduation: Luke will be attending Ohio Northern University, where he will major in electrical engineering and play baseball.
Parents: Ricky and Janice Kiger
Activities and Awards: Heather was a Captain on the Varsity Swim Team. She was a five-time State Champion in Swimming. She was a four-year member of both the Swimming Team and Tennis Team. Heather is a member of National Honor Society and Student Council. She was chosen to be a member of the CERT team.
Plans After Graduation: Heather is planning on swimming in college and majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
Sydney Lammers
Activities and Awards: Sydney was a three-year member of the Varsity Tennis team and two-year member of the Varsity Volleyball team. She was a two year captain of the Tennis team and a Senior Captain of the Volleyball team. Sydney was also the President of the Milan DECA Chapter. She and her partner, Tory Martinsen, were State Finalists their Junior year, and State Champions their Senior year in the category of Sports and Entertainment Team Decision Making. She was the student liaison to the Chamber of Commerce. Sydney was also a member of National Honor Society, and member of National Society of High School Scholars.
Plans After Graduation: Sydney will attend the University of Michigan-Dearborn majoring in Marketing and Advertising.
Tory Martinsen
Activities and Awards: Tory was a three year Varsity Basketball and Football member. He was captain of the Basketball and Football teams his Senior season. He was First Team All State Academic for both Football and Basketball, and First Team All Region for Football. He also was the recipient of the National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete for the Toledo Chapter. Tory was the Vice President of the Milan DECA Chapter. He and his partner, Sydney Lammers, were State Finalists their Junior year, and State Champions their Senior year in the category of Sports and Entertainment Team Decision Making Event. He was the student liaison to the Chamber of Commerce. Tory was also a member of National Honor Society, and AP Scholar award recipient with Honors.
Plans After Graduation: Tory will attend the University of Michigan, majoring in Finance.
Dylan Miller
Activities and Awards: Dylan was a four-year member of the varsity swim, cross country, and track teams. He was a member of the National Honor Society and president of the National Honor Society his junior year. Dylan was a member of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). Dylan has volunteered as a Sixth Grade Camp counselor for two years. Dylan was awarded the AP Scholar Award and named SMISL Athlete of the Year for swimming his sophomore year. Dylan has worked as a swim lessons instructor for four years.
Plans After Graduation: Dylan will be attending Wabash College in Indiana where he will continue to swim and most likely major in political science.
Parents: Jeff and Corrina Orlando
Activities and Awards: Jeremy was a member of the National Honor Society. In his years at Milan High School he participated in Drumline and Marching Band for four years, football for two years, and track for four years. In addition to this, he was very involved in his church youth group, was member of CERT, and joined Drama in his Senior year.
Plans After Graduation: Jeremy will be attending the University of Michigan, majoring in Biology.
Karen Schelkun
Activities and Awards: Karen was a member of the National Honor Society. She received the Society of Women Engineers certificate and the AP Scholar Award. Karen was a four-year member of the Milan High School marching band and concert band. She was the Head Drum major during her junior and senior years and she is one of the trumpet section leaders during her senior year. Throughout high school, Karen has earned many awards at District and State Solo and Ensemble for her piano performances. She is very active in her church youth group, and she has earned awards such as maximum devotions completed and maximum verses quoted each year of high school.
Plans After Graduation: Karen will be attending Kettering University, majoring in Applied Mathematics.
Parent: Rebecca Schramm
Activities and Awards: Michael Schramm was a member of the National Honor Society. He was an AP Scholar with honors and worked on his school’s Mock Trial team. He was also an active member of his youth group, participating on St. Paul’s leadership team and going on mission trips.
Plans After Graduation: Michael will be attending the University of Michigan next fall. He will be majoring in political science and psychology. After receiving his undergraduate degree Michael plans on attending Law School.
