Milan High School Top Scholars
Milan High School held its 2011 graduation ceremonies' June 5 in the high school gymnasium. The class included 230 graduates.
Grace T. Albers
Parents: Shannon and Dennis Albers
Activities and Awards: Grace was a member of the National Honor Society and a Peer Educator for Project Straight Talk. She received a National Sciences and Scholar Athlete awards; named most valuable runner and a state qualifier in cross country and was a Huron League champion. Grace was part of the German Exchange Program / host and exchange student. She was a participated in varsity track, cross country, and soccer.
Plans after graduation: Grace will pursue an education in the medical field, leading to a career in dentistry or nursing. She will either attend Wayne State University or University of Michigan
Matthew (Todd) Allore
Parents: Carl and Karen Allore
Activities and Awards: Todd was a member of the National Honor Society. He participated in six theatre productions, including The Sound of Music, Music Man, Little Shop of Horrors, and Fiddler on the Roof. Todd was secretary of the student council.
Plans after graduation: Todd has been accepted into the Honors College at Grand Valley State University and will be majoring in writing and theater.
Nena Doran
Parents: Michael and Laura Doran
Activities and Awards: Nena was a member of the National Honor Society. She was a member of First team All District, All Huron League, All Region, All Monroe Evening News, All Heritage Newspaper for softball. Nena was a school record holder for softball. She was also a member of the Washtenaw County Dream Team softball, Language Club, and High School Golden Glove.
Plans after graduation: Nena plans to attend Cleveland State University to study physical therapy and play softball.
Jeffrey Elliott
Parents: George and Jenifer Elliott
Activities and Awards: Jeffrey participated in Boys State. He was an AP Scholar with Honor, and a member of the National Honor Society. He participated in football, baseball, bowling, and the Boy Scouts.
Plans after graduation: Jeffrey plans on attending the University of Michigan studying chemical engineering.
Alex Joseph Ellul
Parents: Rob and Cheryl Cross
Activities and Awards: Alex has been inducted into the National Honor Society as well as the National Honor Society of High School Scholars, a recipient of the Academic Letter, a 2009 Michigan Youth Leadership (MYLead) nominee and participant, awarded the Presidential Bronze Volunteer Service Award, awarded the Regents Scholarship from Eastern Michigan University after participation in the Presidential Scholarship Competition, and awarded various honors through competitions and involvement as a member of the Choir at Milan High School. Alex has actively been a part of the Milan Area School's choral program since 6th grade, the Milan High School Leadership Class, the Milan High School Conservation Club, volunteering for various service opportunities, member of his church's Youth Group, and he also serves as the co-director for his church's Children's Choir and Youth Band. In Alex's home he enjoys spending time with his family, singing, and playing the piano.
Plans after graduation: Alex will be attending Eastern Michigan University and majoring in Vocal Music Education.
Jodie Lynn Foster
Parents: Sherri Foster and Geoff Foster
Activities and Awards: Nine first rating District and State solo and ensemble awards, the President's Scholarship to Kettering University. She been involved in SADD, Junior Varsity soccer, travel and indoor soccer. Sherri volunteers at her mom's work, Dawn Farms Rehabilitation Center
Plans after graduation: After Graduation, Jodie plans to attend Kettering University and will be working at a co-op job with Advics.
Matthew Albert Hall
Parents: Ron and Cindy Hall
Activities and Awards: Matthew was on the Honor Roll for each of his four years. He was a recipient of the Academic Letter during his sophomore year. Matthew participated on the College Board AP and a recipient of the AP Scholar Award. He was a member of Academic All State Second Team (Football), and the First Team Academic Huron All League (Football).
Plans after graduation: Matt will be attending Penn State University and will be a member of the Rugby team
Emily Kay Harris
Parents: Almer & Lori Harris
Activities and Awards: Emily was a member of National Honor Society. She played soccer on the Varsity Team since her freshman year. She received an All Conference Award and was a Scholar Athlete her sophomore/junior years and All District during her freshman/sophomore years). Emily was vice president of the Student Council. She was a member of the Language Club and a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
Plans after graduation: Emily will attend the Honors College at Grand Valley State University to study Engineering.
Krista Rae Hoevemeyer
Parents: Gregory K. Hoevemeyer and Mary H. Wines
Activities and Awards: Krista has participated in student government including Class President for 3 years and Student Council President, National Honors Society, Peer Mediation, Language Club Member and Varsity Softball Player. She also participated in the Summer 2010 National Student Leadership Conference. Krista has volunteered at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Plans after graduation: In Fall 2011, Krista will be attending college majoring in biology and plans to go to medical school.
Katherine Libby Hoffman
Parents:
Activities and Awards: Katherine is graduating salutatorian. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Foreign Language Club, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Katherine received an AP Scholar recognition. She had her writing published in national magazine - TeenInk. She is a volunteer at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and participated in Varsity Basketball, Varsity Softball: Team MVP as freshman and junior, All State as a junior, and holds 11 school records in pitching, hitting, base running.
Plans after graduation: Katherine received a scholarship to play softball at University of Detroit Mercy. She will study chemistry or English and participate in Honors program.
Jason Kuck
Parents: Don and Laurie Kuck
Activities and Awards: Jason was inducted into the National Honor Society as a sophomore. He participated in Milan's tennis, basketball, and golf teams.
Plans after graduation: Jason plans to attend Grand Valley State University tp pursue a degree in accounting.
Blake LaFuente
Parents: Brian and Michelle LaFuente
Activities and Awards: Blake was a Michigan Delegate to the 2011 Senate Youth Program. He has been in band for nine years being the section leader for the Alto Saxophones; Captain of the Varsity Tennis team; and Captain of the Quiz Bowl team. Blake participated in Language Club, Student Council, the Varsity Track team, SADD, and was Student Representative to the School Board. He is a member of the National Honor Society and attended Boys State.
Plans after graduation: After high school, Blake plans on pursuing a degree in public policy and obtaining a career in public service.
Taylor Emily Lewis
Parents: Jeff and Julie Lewis
Activities and Awards: Taylor has been active in Cross Country, Basketball, Volleyball, and Track at a High School Level. She is also a member of SERT (Student Emergency Response Team), FCA ( Fellowship of Christian Athletes), NHS (National Honor Society), and the Foreign Language Club. She was chosen to be a Freshmen Mentor, volunteered at Basketball Camps, and works at the local ice cream shop - Milan Dairy Barn.
Plans after graduation: Taylor is attending Michigan State University in the fall to pursue Elementary Education.
Chelsea Young Ja Meyer
Parents:Barry and Sheila Meyer
Activities and Awards: Chelsea is a member of the National Honor Society. She was Milan Varsity Cheerleading Captain and participated in the Milan/German exchange program.
Plans after graduation: Chelsea plans to study Sports Marketing and Communications at Eastern Michigan University.
Leann Grace Rizor
Parents: Cary and Dennis Rizor
Activities and Awards: Leann is a member of the National Honor Society and CERT. She received a National Sciences Award, Scholar Athlete, and earned All State Academics for Volleyball.
Plans after graduation: Leann will be attending Grand Valley State University with hopes to study BioMedical Researching
Dylan Shearer
Parents: Sandy Shearer and Paul Smith
Activities and Awards: Dylan was a member of the National Honor Society receiving an NHS award in his sophomore year. He is a member of Band-1st Trumpet, Varsity Swimming, Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Track, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Students Against Destructive Decisions. Dylan also is a trumpet tutor. He was awarded an Academic Letter (all terms above 3.5 GPA). He also received awards in swimming: 2011 MHSAA State Runner-up (100 Breaststroke) - Set MHS school record; 2011 MHSAA State 3rd place (200 Medley Relay) - Set MHS school record; 2010 MHSAA State Champion (100 Breaststroke, 200 Medley Relay); 2011, 2010 All-State (100 Breaststroke, 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay); 2010 Huron League Champ; 2010 Monroe County Region Swimmer of the Year; 2010 MVP Most Improved (2 years) and was Team Captain (2 Years). Dylan also received awards in: Band Division 1 Rating Trumpet Solo (all 3 years); Band Outstanding Musician (Voted top musician in his class, all 3 years); and the Cross Country Coaches Award.
Plans after graduation: Dylan plans on attending a 4 year college in a pre-medical major followed by medical school.
