Milan school board member loses to challengers; incumbents win in Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester
Long-time incumbent Milan school board member Diane Hovatter lost her seat in Tuesday's school election by two votes, the Monroe Evening News reported.
Russ Billau was the top vote-getter in the three-way race for two seats on the board. He received 430 votes, while Rita Emily Vershum got 416 to Hovatter's 414, the News said. Hovatter has been on the board since 1999, the Milan News Leader reported.
Meanwhile, incumbent school board members won re-election in Manchester, Chelsea and Dexter school board elections Tuesday, according to unofficial election results. Manchester voters also approved proposals to renew a non-homestead millage.
Manchester Board Secretary Vicki Miller was the top vote-getter among the five candidates seeking two seats on the board. With all but one precinct reporting, Miller had 631 votes, and board Vice President Ronald Ellison won re-election with 607 votes. Jeffrey F. Messman got 339 votes; James R. Chinavare received 200 votes; and Robert Weinhardt got 159 votes.
One precinct in Jackson County had not yet reported because of technical difficulties, said Elections Director Colleen Garety. But Garety said the number of voters in that precinct is very small.
The Manchester bond proposals passed easily, the first by a 860 to 316 margin and the second 841 to 326.
In Dexter, incumbent board member Richard "Ron" Darr easily won re-election over write-in challenger J. Shawn Letwin, 565 to 112.Â
In Chelsea, Sally DeVol and Tammy Lehman ran unopposed.
