Milan woman convicted of animal cruelty in embedded collar case

By Art Aisner

A Milan woman pleaded no contest to an animal cruelty charge in a case involving a puppy with a collar embedded in its neck.

Court records show Heather Feist, 35, entered the plea during her first pre-trial hearing in district court. She remains free until sentencing March 9, but was ordered not to have or own any animals.

Feist was charged after an 11-month-old puppy was found tied to the landing of her residence with a collar that was too tight and was embedded into an infected neck wound, police reports said.

Animal cruelty investigators seized the Labrador mix named Lou from her in October and were preparing him for adoption at the DHK Animal Rescue in Milan.

I will use this awful tragedy as a reminder the importance to teach our youth the concept that we are pet guardians, not pet owners. Animals are not something we own, toss, ignore, or throw away when we are done. It is up to us to protect, nourish, & love them. If reading about this tragedy makes you angry, let it be the moment that inspired you to volunteer, and donate your time to help other animals in need.

What is the possible point of having a "pet" if all you are going to do is tie it to a stake (or landing in this case) and leave it out in the elements? It just does NOT make any sense. I cannot imagine life anymore without our 14 pound wiggling & wagging ball of fur getting us up every morning. He makes us smile every day. How can a person abuse something that asks so little in return?

I worked in a private veterinary practice for 5 years. We used to see cases like this and many other conditions due to neglect or improper care on a monthly basis. And I'm not even including what I saw on farms (factory or family) where economics played a role. The ironic thing, I saw more cases of animal cruelty in 1 year of working at a vet practice than I did in 20 years of seeing animals used in scientific research.
