Motorcyclist hit by car in Lodi Township

By Juliana Keeping

A motorcyclist was taken to University of Michigan Hospital this morning with non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a car in Lodi Township, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said.

Authorities have not released his name. Traffic on southbound Ann Arbor-Saline Road was backed up around 9 a.m. at a red light at Pleasant Lake Road after a southbound Mercury Sable hit a stopped motorcyclist from behind, Saline Fire Chief Craig Hoeft said.

The motorcycle was sandwiched between the Mercury Sable and the car in front of it. The motorcyclist was thrown backward from his bike and landed on the Mercury Sable before falling onto the west side of the road and striking the pavement, Hoeft said.

He was wearing a helmet, Hoeft said. The collision remains under investigation, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said.

@ashleigh Glad to hear that you father will be ok. @julianaKeeping Has there been any update on whether the driver was ticketed or the results of the sheriff's investigation?

The cyclist is my father. He spent 3 days at the University of Michigan, received over 300 stitches in his face and staples in his head along with a host of other injuries. Thankfully he will recover. My deepest gratitude to all of those that helped my dad on the scene. Please make an effort to be cognizant of cyclists when driving...it only takes a few seconds of distraction to cause extreme bodily injury.

Thanks, Mark, for the information about the motorcyclist. Ive been worried about him all week. YOU also did a great job. I was impressed by your calmness and compassion in taking care of the motorcyclist. At first glance, his situation seemed grim so I am glad to hear the outcome wasnt as bad.

My sister and I were in the Honda Civic in front of the cyclist. We were both seen by U of M medical (the same place the cyclist was taken), and we got some news about him. We were told that he was going to be OK, and would only be at the hospital for a day or two. He was lucky to have been wearing a helmet. Also I have to say that everyone there acted brilliantly. It was a horrible situation, but people really pulled together to help the gentleman who was hurt. Not only that, but the professionals on the scene responded quickly, and did their job amazingly.

We live near where the accident occured and have witnessed too many accidents (cars, bicyclists, motorcycles, deer...) In fact, I nearly was struck head on, just trying to pull out of my driveway when a car crossed the double yellow line, trying to pass someone. It would be nice if Washtenaw County Road Commission would re-consider lowering the speed limit which is currently 50mph. It's ridiculus on that stretch to speed up and then slam on your breaks at the light, where Tippins is. There are many young children on that stretch and numerous school bus stops throughout the day. I would love to see an article addressing the speed limit. Meanwhile I hope the motorcyclist is o.k.

I hope AnnArbor.com will follow-up on the story. I was at the scene and helped both the motorcyclist and the driver and am very interested in knowing if they are okay. The site of the accident scene stuck with me all day and is a reminder to all of us to be more careful when driving.

I sincerely hope all those who may have been injured will be okay! I live in the general vicinity of this accident, so getting details is of interest. However with that being said, I continue to find the AnnArbor.com (as well as the former Ann Arbor News) rarely ever followed up on their own stories. Hopefully, some reporter will go the next step and get some details.

We seem to have hit a rough patch in terms of car vs non-car accidents: One motorcyclist, one pedestrian and one cyclist in the last several weeks. Be careful out there folks.
