Motorcyclist killed, wife critically injured in crash in Ypsilanti Township

By Lee Higgins

A motorcylist was killed and his wife was critically injured in a collision Sunday night on Textile Road in Ypsilanti Township, Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies said.

A 2006 Yamaha R1 motorcyle was traveling east when it struck the rear of a 2006 Hummer traveling in the same direction at about 9:50 p.m, ejected the motorcycle operator and his wife, a sheriff's office news release said.

The 29-year-old motorcyclist from Ypsilanti Township was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His wife, who was a passenger, was airlifted to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition, the release said.

The collision remains under investigation.

I would like to set the record straight. I was in the car headed west bound on Textile at the time of the accident, I witnessed it all. It wasn't the Hummer's fault, if anything the Hummer tried to pull over to the side of the road to let the motorcyclist by but the motorcycle was going too fast and instead of being able to stop or make it around the Hummer it rearended it. It was horrible and tragic, I am extremely sorry for the failies loss.

Another sad night in Ypsilanti with fatalities. Wish there was something on the horrific accident on I-94 that killed a teenager from Wyandotte Saturday night. It was near the Huron St. exit and it was terrible, I saw it. Please update on this if you can.

@Edward Vielmetti Will you provide the detailed findings when the investigation is completed?

^ or the person driving the can't-get-out-of-its-own-way behemoth could've pulled out right in front of them and wasn't paying attention. Even at under the speed limit in that area, well, that's all it would take.

mrshicks1223, either the hummer could have stopped suddenly, the motorcycle could have been going too fast to stop safely, the motorcycles brakes could have given out, the hummer could have suddenly turned in front of the motorcycle... There are many scenarios that could end with this result. Although without more information we can only guess at what happened.

I was trying to figure out how they hit the rear unless the vehicle stopped suddenly. How sad...

Ugh, how awful - and they hit the rear... I can't even imagine.
