University of Michigan move-in week traffic restrictions announced
Todd Mars grunted a bit as he swung the last box out of his friend’s pickup truck late Thursday afternoon.
“Books,” the third-year University of Michigan student said. “Heavier than the clothes boxes. It’s the last one, so that’s OK. There’s beer upstairs when I get this up there.”
Mars was moving in with a couple friends who are already living in a State Street apartment, trying to beat the rush of moving vans and eager freshmen that's about to descend on Ann Arbor.
U-M's class of 2014 will start moving into university housing on Aug. 31 , with everyone in place by Sept. 3.
And with move-in comes traffic restrictions on streets around campus.
“With the cooperation of the City of Ann Arbor, some streets in the immediate vicinity of residence halls will see traffic-flow alterations, daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1 through Friday, Sept. 3,” the university said in a press release.
Traffic alterations include:
- Thompson: One-way traffic flow southbound between Jefferson and Packard.
- East Madison: One-way traffic flow eastbound between Thompson and State.
- East Washington: One-way traffic flow westbound between Fletcher and State.
- Observatory: One-way traffic flow southbound between East Ann and Geddes.
Additional parking changes will impact university parking lots that will be converted to move-in use only for the duration of the program.
University lots that will be impacted are:
- Lot W-18 (on Thompson St.)
- Lot W-16 (on Thompson St.) commonly called the “triangle lot.”
- Lot M-28 (on Washington Heights) (Aug. 31 - Sept. 3)
- Lot E-1 (on N. University Court across from Stockwell Hall)
- Palmer Commons parking structure: Though the structure will remain in normal operation, it will be available for move-in participants to park.

The annual migration cometh, just like the buzzards returning to Hinckley, Ohio, for the rut.
