Update: Eleven injured in 3-car crash after Ford-150 crosses centerline

This story has been updated with additional information from HVA.

Eleven people reportedly were injured in a three-vehicle accident Monday evening on Geddes Road between LeForge and Prospect in Superior Township, authorities said.

Joyce Williams with Huron Valley Ambulance said a minivan, an SUV and a truck were involved in the accident, which responders were called to at 5:05 p.m.

A vehicle on fire was brought under control rather quickly, Williams said. One person was trapped inside a vehicle. Crews had the person out and transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in unstable condition at 6:36 p.m., Williams said.

Three other patients were taken to St. Joe's, two in critical condition, the other in stable condition. Seven additional patients were being taken to both U-M Hospital and C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, though Williams could not immediately confirm how many were children.

Geddes Road between LeForge and Prospect was closed as authorities responded to the crash, said Derrick Jackson of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. Parts of LeForge also were closed. The roads were expected to reopen by 8 p.m.

Ann Arbor woman Kyle Norris was driving in the area at the time. She didn't witness the accident, but was on the scene moments later. She said she walked closer to the scene of the accident and saw "a car flipped over with smoke coming out of it."

Norris said the SUV was on its back and there was a person trapped inside. A man and a child seemed to have escaped from the SUV, she added.

The pick-up truck was occupied by a man and the minivan by a woman and several children, Norris said.

Fire departments from Ann Arbor and Superior townships, the sheriff's office and HVA all responded to the accident.

Great to hear everyone came out unscathed. After the last few weeks of this, I have to ask. Any dog injuries? Photos? Ah moments? Otherwise, wow, what a mess. And we are suppose to get more snow this week.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 1:31 p.m.

What was the cause of the accident?

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 5:25 p.m.

I will be very interested to hear that as well. Driving that stretch many times per week, I am interested in the suspected cause.

Philly, I've talked to Sgt. Geoffrey Fox of the WCSO this morning and he said more information on this crash is going to be released this morning. I'm waiting on that update now.

I was wondering that too.

I feel the paper should give time for the family's to be notified before they post pictures! That woman in the black escape has another daughter who wasn't in the car and had to find out about her family's accident through a news article!

Sun, Feb 10, 2013 : 4:26 p.m.

Willgote it's the same escape my mom has it was a woman man and child. And at the back of the SUV on the ground is a blanket my moms had on the seats of her cars for as long as I can remember, that's enough indication for me. And there's definitely no speed about it they have very long roads to recoveries. But they're here and that's what's important!

Wed, Feb 6, 2013 : 2:12 p.m.

Ashley, I'm sorry to hear about your family and the manner in which you had to find out. I guess I do not see where there is any indication, other than the picture of the vehicle, that would identify the people involved. Regardless, this is a terrible accident. I pray for a speedy recovery of all involved and their families. I think the news was doing what they do, report news, and did the right thing to withhold the identities of those involved.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 8:26 p.m.

Yea only this is my family, my baby sister and parents! This article was posted around 530 they didn't notify me until 8 o'clock and my baby sister had been asking for me from the time they put her in the ambulance. I understand the hospital has to focus in getting my family stable but the newspaper should give time for this

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 7:04 p.m.

That is how I found out someone died as well. You know what? Any way you put it, I am just glad to be notified.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 5:51 p.m.

@ Ashely, I concur. I felt that way once when someone had died in a vehicle and the picture was up soon after, that earned me double secret probation.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 2:24 p.m.

Ashley, I was one of the first people at the seen of that crash before the first responders got there. I am praying and hoping that the entire family in the SUV is recovering. My thoughts and prayers are with that entire family.

Pray for a safe recovery of especially the woman trapped in the SUV. My thoughts are with your child and husband as they wait to know you are ok. Also I hope all the kids in the minivan taken to Motts are okay. God bless the first responders and especially the tow truck drivers who are also usually on of the first on the scene and part of there job is seeing the horrorfic aftermath of these auto accidents. Help those great guys at Budget/Studium/Glen Ann/Milan Towing and make sure to give them room to do their job as well safely by slowing down when passing them on the side of the road and giving them a wide berth. Their job sometimes ends up being more dangerous at the actual scene of the accident then the firefighters so give them room to do their job safely so they can come home safe to the family's that love them as well.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 7:24 a.m.

Thank you! The family in the SUV is all alive and that's what's important right now, but it's going to be a long recovery for all 3 of them, the woman being the worse! Prayers are definitely appreciated

Any 4-Wheel Drive vehicles involved? If so, it would add to the story. I suggest that future winter accident newstories Include 4-Wheel Drive information. i am particularly keen about some driving public knowledge about 4WD owners operating beyond their capability in winter driving.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 6:42 p.m.

You're right nunya, you're obviously the only one that knows anything. My old timey 2008 disengages at 25, just like my ancient 03 did.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 7:19 a.m.

Your 4wd theory is no good the woman in the black escape always does 5 under on a good day so when the roads are bad she's very careful!

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 6:26 a.m.

4 wheel drives can get going faster in bad conditions, but don't stop any faster, so it's easy to get into trouble by driving too fast for conditions.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 4:24 a.m.

You obviously don't know anything about 4wd. My 4wd has a high gear and I can drive fast if I so choose. Just choose not to. 25mph might be something from days past

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 3:02 a.m.

it's been my experience that 4WDs disengage at 25MPH, so they likely don't cause as many accidents as you believe they do.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 1:32 a.m.

Wishing a speedy recovery to everyone involved. Seriously, this town needs to slow down especially when there is snow and ice....its not worth it.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 1:22 a.m.

Hope everyone will be alright and recover soon.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 1:14 a.m.

Sure hoping everyone survives. Did the accident occur at the corner of Prospect and Geddes, LeForge and Geddes, or neither one? Where did the witness say that it happened exactly?

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 12:01 p.m.

Thank you Courtney. As I live nearby I didn't want to get in anyone's way but was interested in exactly where it happened. I appreciate your response.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 2:32 a.m.

Paddock Way is not highly visible from Geddes, especially westbound, and most people driving on Geddes at that point are flying. The posted speed is high as it is yet few drivers seem to honor it.

Geddes between Superior and Ridge is a challenging road at night or when it is snowy. I try to avoid it when it's both. Not sure if the conditions played any role here, but you don't have as much room for error as some roadsif something goes wrong. Sounds like an awful accident and hope all involved recover. Also, big thanks to the responders - it can't be easy doing their work on the side of that road when it's 20 degrees out.

Mon, Feb 4, 2013 : 11:30 p.m.

I'll be thinking of and hoping for the full recovery of all involved. The photograph shows a very chaotic scene. God Bless our first responders.

dading dont delete me bro

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 1:28 a.m.

piney woods dude, it is ok to pray.

Tue, Feb 5, 2013 : 1:02 a.m.

@justcurious. It is difficult for me to say "praying for" (as so many posters say); I like your phrase "thinking of and hoping for." I, also, am thinking of and hoping for the full recovery of all involved. And, if there is a God (I am considering subscribing to "Pascal's Wager" -- Google it); ah heck! I'll just say that I Truly Appreciate the outstanding service, and their risk of life, of the Firefighter, Ambulance and Tow Truck responders!
