New state recreation area coming to southern Jackson, Washtenaw counties
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will be using a $3 million natural resources trust fund grant it recently received to create a new recreation area in southern Jackson and Washtenaw counties.
The Department of Natural Resources received a $3 million trust fund grant to purchase 2,000 acres of this property for a recreation area with fishing, hunting and outdoor recreation.

The total land acquisition will cost about $5.5 million. The DNR will be selling some of its property, including some in Oakland County, to provide matching funds, MLive.com reported.
The trust fund grants were recently signed into effect by Gov. Rick Snyder -- which allocated several million dollars to fund Washtenaw County projects.

This is great news. That property is beautiful. We have ridden past it for years on our motorcycles and admired it. Most recently it was a large cattle operation and was listed by Sotheby's for sale. Good for all of us in the area.

Awesome purchase. Can't wait to go play there with my dog. I just hope it doesn't get fracked up!

The picture appears to be of Arnold lake which is the Trolz farm. This is a beautiful piece of property which has been for sale for a while now. If you read the caption this is going to be a recreation area, like Waterloo or Pinckney recreation area. I only wish my friend and hunting buddy, Brian, had lived to see this. It was his dream that the state would acquire this property to make a recreation area. Kudos to Gov. Snyder! He is turning out to be an excellent Governor.

Great purchase for those who prefer to get out and live vs. watching others do it on TV.

A $3M grant buying (with matching funds) 2000 acres outright means that the Ann Arbor Greenbelt Committee is grossly overpaying for amorphous development rights which cannot be accessed or used. To be fair, it's only tax money, not real money. And Washtenaw tax-foreclosure auctions are great opportunities to buy cheap greenbelt properties outright (if buying tax-foreclosed properties with tax money is not rubbing it in too much for the tax-evicted).

This land is nowhere near Ann Arbor. Why not stick with the subject?

When I said those of us that pay for it CAN'T use it. I was referring to the properties bought with Greenbelt funds. I am TOTALLY in favor of this new recreation land that can be used by all!

As usual, READ THE ARTICLE. It is to be used as a Recreation Area.

jcj, it also means it won't be turned into trailer parks or strip malls. It means there won't be a continuous tendril of sprawl connecting Ann Arbor to Detroit's suburbs. It is a great investment.

"will not be used for building anything." Which means those of us that pay for it CAN'T use it!

The Greenbelt funds are used specifically for the purchase of development rights from farmers, meaning that farming on that land will continue and it will not be used for building anything. The development rights are not "amorphgous", they are real. Buying foreclosed properties is not appropriate because these properties are not used for farming.
