Nigerian accused in plane attack released from University of Michigan Medical Center

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight near Detroit has been released from the University of Michigan Medical Center into the custody of federal marshals.

Gina Balaya, a spokeswoman for federal prosecutors in Detroit, said Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is being kept in a secure location.

Abdulmutallab's lawyer said Sunday that he's now in a federal prison in Milan.

The 23-year-old Abdulmutallab was being treated for burns at the U-M Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He was charged Saturday with attempting to destroy or wreck an aircraft and placing a destructive device in a plane.

The FBI says a device containing an explosive was attached to his body Friday while aboard a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam. Passengers put out the fire and subdued him.

Tinkerbell, he's been on every tv program, and in all of the national media. He's a Dutch native. He's everywhere!

You noticed it too, tinkerbell. I happen to think that the reason that the mainstream media are choosing not to acknowledge the heroes more, is that by doing so, it keeps the heat off Homeland Security's (the administration's) intelligence failures (since it would admit that citizens, and not the government, are doing what it takes). Network news editors are simply thinking that the good PR for the heroes would be taking away from the Obama brand, so why do it?

Why isn't anyone talking about the heroes that stopped this from being a tragedy?

Top Cat..... What I am saying is that FEAR cannot drive our decisions...REASON must drive them.Fear is a terrorist tactic. And yet we see fear being used against our president due to this attack, ignoring the previous attacks. That's the point. Stop using fear to drive people to unreasonable assumptions and actions and start using reason and good solid decisions. When we act in fear, (including our congressional "leaders") we play into the terrorists hands. I take this very seriously. The reaction in this country and in our congress after 9-11 should be the reaction for this incident. A unified stand against terrorism instead of the ridiculous finger pointing going on by fringe groups. As we stood behind President Bush we should stand behind President Obama. That is not happening. And that is a disgrace and in my opinion, unpatriotic....when we are under attack.

Thank you Top Cat for your rational thinking. I am so tired of people's ideological jabs.

Neither of the above comments is appropriate. This came real close to happening and killing a lot of innocent people. We need to know why all these errors in security occured and adjust accordingly. Anyone who thinks we are not in a war against extremist Muslim terrorists needs to think again.

Theo...no more than Bush threw a parade for the 9-11 terrorists or Richard Reid. The funniest thing - after all of the extremist right wingers shook in fear of terrorist Standish prisoners...now they have one in Milan. Hilarious. Perhaps Hoekstra can start digging a nice deep bunker for all right wingers to hide in.
