No Salem Township officials are recalled

By Tom Perkins

None of the five Salem Township elected officials who faced a recall election were ousted.

According to preliminary results from Ypsilanti Clerk Frances McMullan, who was appointed by the county to oversee the election, Supervisor Bob Heyl, Treasurer Paul Uherek, Clerk David Trent, Trustee Wayne Wallazy and Trustee Brien Witkowski all survived the recall efforts.

According to McMullan's unofficial tally, the candidates each received 400 to 500 more "no" votes than "yes" votes.

The recall effort stemmed from a pair of controversial votes at an April 13 board meeting. Heyl, Uherek and Wallazy voted with Trustee Marcia Von Fossen to dissolve the township's fire authority board and evict the post office from township-owned property.

A petition to recall all but Van Fossen for those two votes was written by Salem Township resident Bonnie Cook.

A counter-recall effort citing Witkowski and Trent's votes against dissolving the fire authority board and evicting the post office from township-owned property was subsequently filed by Salem Township resident Jane Griffith.

Heyl said he didn't believe elected officials should be recalled for how they vote, but only for serious misconduct or legal violation while in office. He said he hopes the board can now reconcile and move forward.

"I want to do what’s best for the township, and maybe now we can get down to some business that maybe we should have been doing all along," Heyl said.
