Rebecca Blank, who served as dean at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy from 1999 to 2007, serves as the acting deputy secretary of commerce.
The appointment, which must be approved by the U.S. Senate, would make that post official.
Blank has worked for the Clinton administration and served as the top economist at the commerce department. She was also the co-director of U-M's National Poverty Center.
