Old Tios building next to Ann Arbor city hall comes down

By Erica Hobbs

The former home of Tios Mexican Cafe was demolished today.

The original building for Tios Mexican Cafe is no more.

Workers demolished the restaurant's former facility at 333 Huron St. in Ann Arbor today and hope to haul out its remaining parts tomorrow.

The city bought the parcel last year as part of the plan to expand its municipal center on Fifth Street.

Tios relocated to 401 E. Liberty St. this summer.

Thank you, City of Ann Arbor, for tearing down the source of some of the worst Mexican food ever served to human beings. This place is a disgrace.

All this talk of the wonderful mural and how much it meant and no mention of our local treasure, Zeke Mallory, the artist!

Next - Ann Arbor News Building. Followed by Michigan Bell Telephone Building. (next door to AA News, on Huron). Probably so we can have a few more bars, or parking lots.

Thank your for finding and posting the mural link - I'm really liking the online format (even with the trolls...)

It's a shame to lose that awesome mural and old building, especially when in exchange we get an ugly new government palace. Oh boy.

At least we get a huge new high tech Council Chamber with individual offices and indoor parking for Council members. Oh and a raised garden walkway for the Mayor and Administrator to enjoy as they walk back and forth from the Larcom building. Its a good thing in these hard times that we didn't let a successful local small business get in the way of municipal priorites.

if the city is so concerned about art why did'nt keep the mural? I liked it. maybe because it was'nt a 3/4 million dollar toilet. But I guess it's none of business,I don't have to pay A2's taxes

I sure hope that the mural has been documented for public viewing, perhaps at the downtown library or at the Washtenaw Co. Historical Museum (500 N. Main)?

The mural that probably cost a thousand or two (if that) is gone. Loved to look at it. The one that will cost a million 200 ft away will look like crap forever. So much for art or historical preservation.

More expensive parking - at least it's not underground...
