Updated story: Police say drunken driver caused crash that killed 32-year-old Canton woman, injured two children
One person is dead and four others have been transported to local hospitals after a crash at Ecorse and Harris roads this afternoon involving multiple vehicles. The intersection was reopened before 8 p.m.
Captain Larry James of the Ypsilanti Township Fire Department said the department responded to the crash at about 5 p.m. The six-vehicle crash was caused when a vehicle attempting to beat the traffic light collided with a vehicle that was turning, sending both vehicles careening into four other vehicles, James said.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, one person was transported to University of Michigan Hospital for injuries and three others were taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. No details were available as to the extent of the injuries of the four people transported to the hospital.
The intersection will remain closed while officials investigate the crash, James said.

That is a bad intersection! I feel for the family and especially the kids. I always slow down and look before going through a green light in fear this could happen to me. My prayers go out to this family. What a tragedy! Sorry for your loss and I pray the little boy gets better...

Im so upset over this sensless accident. My daughter knew Stephanie and her family and she is in shock. We were there after the accident happened and she didnt know it was her friend. Im angry that people drive recklessly and destroy lives and families. I only hope and pray that this will make people think when they get behind the wheel of a car.My prayers and thoughts goes out to the family. May God comfort them and give them the strength they need to get through this horrible time.

According to the dispatch center at the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, there is no further information available beyond what I've reported. Just got off the phone with them to check in on the accident. Alex, you may in fact be right, but official word is that there is one fatality.

Wonder who was all invalved or if I know any of them in the accident? I live in Ypsi and drive that way all the time and I have no problems with that intersection. People in Ypsi just need to learn how to drive period.

I just drove through that intersection about 30 minutes ago. It may be restricted still but it is open. Crazy thing is, that intersection is not that busy but for mid afternoon rush hour traffic. Of the accidents I've witnessed, trying to beat the light is the most common.

My prayers go to the families. I can see a traffic circle at this spot in the future. That always seems to be the answer to intersection that have lots of accidents.
