One teenager dead, another in critical condition after car crash in Salem Township

By Lee Higgins

A Howell boy was killed and a Northville girl was critically injured when they were ejected from a Jeep that struck a tree Sunday afternoon on 6 Mile Road in Salem Township, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said.

The 15-year-olds, who were in the back seat, were not wearing seat belts during the 4:59 p.m. crash east of Curtis Road, deputies said.

The girl was airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital, where she remains in critical condition, a sheriff's department news release said.

A 17-year-old Northville boy who was driving the car was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, the release said.

According to the release, the 1995 Jeep was traveling east when the driver lost control. It went off the road, hitting the tree.

While the crash remains under investigation, alcohol and speed don't appear to be factors, deputies said.

Anyone with information can call the sheriff department's tip line at (734) 973-7711.

My heart goes out to both families. This is a horrible tragedy, that will change lives forever. From what I've read about the kids, they were on there way to a Bible study. I am so glad to know that these young people had Jesus in their lives.

So horribly sad. We were going into South Lyon at about 6:15 and were turned down Currie by the fire truck closing the road. We could see red flashing lights down the road, and we knew right then something was terribly wrong down there. Coming home later when Six Mile was open again, we saw the orange lines on the road marking the scene/skids and the damaged tree. Those poor, poor kids and their families. My heart goes out to them, and to their friends at school.

This story puts in perspective all the petty back and forth that goes on after some stories. And I am as guilty as anyone. We argue about lights at the stadium, bikers, dogs, who should be quarterback. But when something like this happens we need to realize we take some of these things too seriously. I am not saying we should not express our concerns. But when you have had your breath taken away from you with this kind of news EVERYTHING else is nothing. May God grant these families the strength to get through this.

It's so sad to lose such young people with their futures ahead of them. If you have teenagers that drive, or ride with friends, please, please, please implore upon them the issue of seat belt use, it could save their lives someday.

My prayers go out to both of the families. We were on site right after the accident occurred and it was a horrible scene. May God keep these families strong as they deal with long road ahead of them.
