Deb Mexicotte knows what is best for the future of children within school district

By Letters to the Editor

I am writing to share my strong belief that re-electing Deb Mexicotte to the Ann Arbor School Board is the best way forward for our children and our city.

Deb’s experience, compassion, and leadership qualities are what we need most in these difficult financial times. Education is not a business. Our children are not commodities. Yes, the budget is a problem, but AAPS is not a business. Financial profit and educational profit are not the same thing and Deb understands this. Her opponent does not. A knee-jerk reaction for change when the going gets tough is not the way forward. Ann Arbor Schools need a proven leader, mediator, negotiator — a champion. Someone who has a track record for being involved and caring about the education of our children. Deb is this person. Her opponent is not. I urge you to endorse Deb Mexicotte and encourage your readers to re-elect Deb Mexicotte to the Ann Arbor School Board.

Well, until Ms. Mexicotte properly deals with the achievement gap and incompetent teachers, she not even running the educational profit business well. Our children are not mandated commodities and have choice in finding the highest quality education. Record numbers are leaving the AAPS district to Charter schools. You will just be left with the difficult to educate kids. Get rid of the underperforming teachers!

A decade on the school board and what do we have to show for it? 1) Millions spent on school facilities off limits to all but the varsity athletes 2) The most expensive school superintendent in the state 3) A school superintendent who still lives out of state and works at AAPS 4 days a week most weeks 4) A football game fight that resulted in no discipline to speak of for the "adults" who started it 5) A growth in the overhead costs and no administrative layoff (they shuffled some people from the admin account to support staff) 6) A significant decrease in teachers and larger class sizes 7) An inability to attract children to schools of choice and to keep children in the district 8) Principals that parents are leaving schools to avoid 9) A board that has gone along with every consultant or administrative request 10) An a requirement by the administration for the board to do a Freedom of Information Act request to get information. 10 good reasons to put Ms. Mexicotte back on the school board....yes sir!
