Drumming up support for a graduated income tax
A report by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy in Washington calls Michigan's tax structure "horribly regressive" and lends credence to the Detroit Free Press's call Sunday for tax reform, a Friday editorial says.
The editorial notes that the study found those making between $32,000 and $54,000 a year pay almost 10 percent of their income in state and local taxes. Those who make between $365,000 and $1 million annually pay 8 percent of their earnings in taxes.
In short, the rich need to pay more, the editorial says. "The study provides important context for the debate about how to fix Michigan's finances and shows how far the state really has to go before any cries of "unfairness" to wealthy earners can be taken seriously."

"In short, the rich need to pay more" says ITEP. Just exactly who are the rich? ITEP claims to be non partisan but just look at their board of directors a bunch of college professors and union leaders. What a joke. The top 5% of income earners pay over 50% of total taxes in this country. Raise taxes on the rich and watch our jobs dissapear even faster.
