"That's my business. That's between me and the county, so I just do not choose to discuss it." - Washtenaw County Commissioner Barbara Levin Bergman, D-Ann Arbor, refusing to comment on why she hasn’t reimbursed the county for $1,800 in per diem payments that an audit says were improperly billed.

"Honestly, I don't know. I haven't done anything with it. I don't know if it's a lack of interest so much as just it's a low priority, given the other things we've got to deal with right now." Washtenaw County board Chairman Conan Smith, D-Ann Arbor, on why he hasn’t reimbursed the county for the $591 in per diem and mileage payments the same audit showed he improperly collected between 2005 and 2010.

“I’m very happy that people came out and voted, and voted for us to keep doing the good work that we're doing. We’ve lost a lot of time because several board members were supporting this, and we couldn’t do township business.” - Augusta Township Clerk Kathy Giszczak, on last week’s failed recall election against her.

“I’m not sure how we resolve the issues, quite honestly. You still have a clerk who is difficult, at best, to work with at the board level. We have to deal with deception and mistrust, so I’m not sure how we contend with that. It won’t get easier by any means.” - Augusta Township Trustee Mike King, who supported the recall election against Clerk Kathy Giszczak.

Conan's Smith's lackadaisical attitude is appaling.
