Let's push Congress to make child nutrition bill a priority

By Letters to the Editor

We know that there are families with children in our community who struggle with hunger every day. With your partnership and support, we are working hard to reduce hunger here in Washtenaw County by serving families and supporting programs that feed children afterschool, on weekends, and during the summer.

This year, Congress is considering a child nutrition bill that impacts both the families we serve and the programs we operate. This bill provides an opportunity to reduce child hunger by increasing children’s access to child nutrition programs.

Unfortunately, the bill passed by the Senate in August didn’t go far enough to make sure low-income children are connected with these vital programs.

On Tuesday, September 21, please join Food Gatherers in participating in a nationwide call-to-action day. Simply call or email your House representative and ask them to make the child nutrition bill a top priority this month. You may find your representative with your zipcode at www.house.gov/zip/ZIP2Rep.html, or by district at www.govtrack.us/congress/findyourreps.xpd?state=MI.

Congress will make this bill a priority if they believe it is important to their constituents. Please help us show them that it is.

Eileen Spring, President/CEO Food Gatherers

Simplify it, make school lunches free for any family with more than 2 schoolkids making less than 25 grand a year. Forget having to fill out all those complicated forms and all, by the time you get them filled out all the data has changed anyways because of jobs turnover etc.
