What do Medicaid and the Detroit airport have to do with one another?

NOTHING! That is why I am curious to know why the outrageous 27 percent tax that is added to my parking bill at the airport goes to indigent healthcare? The tax was a temporary tax, to help Wayne County.

Temporary, as in 25 years ago! But we are still being charged. This is a prime example of our politicians saying one thing and doing another. If I am being taxed to park at the airport at least the money should go to the airport!

I read with interest the comments of millage advocates Gunn, Baker and Serras. They may have overlooked a few points (and/or not mentioned them) in their enthusiasm to saddle taxpayers with a $130,000,000 bill:

1) The library already is an institution that makes available to taxpayers books, music, tapes, the Web and other sources of information. It doesn't need promoting.

2) As a frequent library user, the key facilities of the library work very well. While those facilities don't include a catering service or 400 person auditorium (two items used to justify the library bond), may I suggest that these items are better suited to a convention or community center, not a library. Maybe Gunn, Baker, Serras and their compatriots should repackage the bond as a convention center bond and see how that works for them

3) Last but not least, taxpayers rejected the bond by a significant margin (more than 10 percent) in EVERY municipality it appeared. Can't chalk that margin up to last-minute ad blitzes by shadowy property owners and their nefarious ad agencies — sorry.

The key role of the Library Trustees in a participatory democracy is to be responsible stewards of taxpayer funds and their wishes, not do more planning and waste more money going back to voters with a more detailed proposal that is likely to be turned down again!

Trustees, your proposal was turned down by the voters. Accept the wishes of the electorate, and perhaps devote some energy to a proposal that would be judged favorably by the voters, cost less and have less doodads that have nothing to do with literacy and reading. A catering center doesn't teach children and a society to read. Books do.
