Michigan Medicaid does not meet the dental needs of the mentally disabled

By Letters to the Editor

Re: “State earns ‘C’ for dental care” (Thursday, February 25, page A12). Make that an “E.’

It is my understanding that Michigan Medicaid stopped paying for dental care this year (except for certain life-threatening infections or injuries which require emergency room care).

This impacts lower-income and disabled people but especially the mentally disabled who need general anesthesia just for an exam or x-rays. This anesthesia needs to be given by an oral surgeon, and will cost much more than a regular dentist’s exam.

There is a class action lawsuit about this against the State of Michigan. But who knows, if and when, it will get Michigan Medicaid to cover dental care again?
