Oil spill in Gulf of Mexico should be the final wake-up call for clean energy

By Letters to the Editor

This (the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico) should be the final wake-up call to everyone that we need to move in the direction of renewable energy and get away from fossil fuels. I can't believe this even needs to be discussed but our Government only seems to listen to Big Business and not the PEOPLE.

I think BP was dragged their feet in plugging the leak in an effort to keep the well producing. The folks in Chesapeake Bay (Kennedy Country) were worried about their view (Ed Kennedy included) being obstructed by a wind power proposal. Folks on Lake Michigan are protesting the installation of a Wind Farm. Go figure. I bet the republican governor of Louisianna isn't yelling "drill baby, drill" anymore. The "less" government republican is now crying for more government intervention and saying they should be doing more. Typical of the "Repulsive" party.

"probably won't impact your cozy little lives much" My cozy little life supports my kids and future grandkids all the way through their college years. Don't belittle my life by calling it "little" Mr. Eddie Murrow. "peak oil". The "peak oil" level in 1970 predicted we would run out of oil by the year 2020. With new technology( for exploration and higher oil prices ( to fund the new technology) we have enough oil in the ground to last another 100 years at current and increased demand. All oil companies are investing in new technologies like wind, solar, fuel cell, and though the price for these new technologies is not competitive at this time, it will be in the future. Let's get off our soap boxes here folks unless we all drive nuclear powered cars, none of which exist!

Ever heard of "peak oil"? Worst case it has already happened. Best case is that it will happen within the next two decades. Probably won't impact your cozy little lives much, but your children and grandchildren will suffer the consequences of our unwillingness to pursue energy alternatives BEFORE there was a real energy crisis. Good Night and Good Luck

Rubbish I say Terry. Do you drive a car, do you heat your home with fuel oil or nat gas?

Actually, they are listening to the people. The majority doesn't want to pay at least triple for our energy and we don't want to lose two jobs for every "clean" job created. There is more than enough fossil fuel and as long as there is, solar and wind will never be practical.
