Oiumet should renounce campaign flier attacking Green over late tax payments

By Letters to the Editor

I recently received a flier titled "That's a lot of 'Green,'" which alleges some late tax payments by Christine Green. This type of divisive politics is exactly why the approval ratings for both Washington and Lansing are now at an all-time low. If I wasn't already supporting Chris, this ad would have put me squarely in her camp.

We all know that there are several reasons (all valid and legal) why people might be late in paying their taxes. To hint at some nefarious reason is repugnant and, quite frankly, should be beneath the Republic Party (the author of this despicable piece) and Mark Ouimet (the "beneficiary" of this mailing).

I know the ad states it is "not authorized by any candidate" but Mr. Ouimet had to know it was in the works. In fact, I understand that Chris even explained to him the reasons behind the tax issues. And still he went forward with it.

Mark, for the sake of the voters, I would ask you to stop the dirty politics and run a clean campaign. Run on your record. Run on your accomplishments. Remember, you are known by what you do. You are known by what you say. People now know that you have gone negative and I think it reflects poorly on your campaign and on you. Please treat office the for which you are running with the dignity it deserves.

I expect you to publicly denounce this flier and its source. That is the only way you can redeem yourself. To allow this flier to go unchallenged by you tells me that you are just another political hack and, if elected, will bring nothing new to Lansing.

I think all Washtenaw County folks are going to see All the County Commissioner expense reports very very soon - and the Dems will have some explaining to do! btw - Mark Ouimet donates all his Washtenaw Commission income. The county knows Mark well - he has received endorsements from many including: Michigan Chamber of Commerce Michigan Restaurant Association Michigan Association of realtors Michigan Township Association Michigan Association of Home Builders Michigan Automobile Dealers Association Michigan Agri-business association Michigan association of Home Builders Michigan Association of Health Plans Detroit Regional Chamber Ann arbor Ypsilanti regional chamber Small Business Association of Michigan National Federation of Independent business Association of builders and contractors Ann Arbor Firefighters Association Ann Arbor Area board of realtors South Eastern Michigan Chiefs of Police Police officers association of Michigan and many many more...

Ouimet and the GOP had to know, or at least strongly suspect, that his heavy past indulgence in per diem expense claims would be raised as as a fall campaign issue. One wonders if the state GOP sought to blunt the potential negative impact by launching this flier as a preemptive attack. It appears to represent a distraction that tries to make Green's long-ago personal finances a bigger concern than his far more recent, notable costs to the county as a commissioner going to meetings to and fro on the public dime, er, diem.
