Praying Notre Dame president’s actions are sincere
In early June, I wrote a letter to the editor in the Ann Arbor News titled "Notre Dame chooses prestige over truth." It was in regard to the scandal caused by Notre Dame, a Catholic University, in not only inviting President Obama to speak at the commencement, but to give him an honorary Doctorate Of Law. This was in spite of the fact that he is the most pro-abortion president we have ever had.
My closing paragraph stated " so let us all continue to pray that President Obama and others become more pro- life rather than anti- life, and that Father Jenkins and Notre Dame will become a truly Catholic University that supports life". Now, to my surprise, Holy Cross Father Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president, announced in a Sept. 16 e-mail to the university community that he plans to attend the March For Life in Washington, D.C., next January, and hopes to offer a Mass For Life there. He also recently formed a task force on supporting the Choice For Life. Many question his sincerity, since he will not drop charges against (88) persons who were arrested and jailed after the protest at the commencement. Again, we will pray that Father Jenkins initiatives play out as positive steps forward, not just a cover up to save face. Howard H. Schafer Ann Arbor

You certainly are correct AAFish. There is much "selective" hipocracy! All the wanted babies that die due to our mediocre standing in the world for infant mortality. We are way behind many Third World nations! They are only concerned with the unwanted fetuses and not the lives of the mothers. Or all the Americans who die every year because they have no health insurance. There are many "life" issues that are never discussed by the so called "right to life" crowd. They are never concerned with the innocents killed by our Perpetual War Profiteering Machine! Selective Indignation indeed!

Just a bit odd, isn't it? The Catholic Church came out unequivocally against the death penalty a number of years ago. But when President G.W. Bush, the "Execution Governor" of the State of Texas, spoke at Notre Dame in 2001, there was none of this howling and yowling about his seeming inconsistency with the Church's teachings. There seems to be a bit of Selective Indignation at work here.
