Republicans blocked Democrats from passing budget last year

By Letters to the Editor

The Republicans are spreading the falsehood that the Democrats never passed a budget last year while they had control of Congress.

The truth is that the Democrats in the House did pass a budget, but it was filibustered in the Senate by Republicans. Eventually, Harry Reid agreed to the Republican version of the budget, but the Republicans upped the ante and still refused to pass it.

That's what really happened.

The Democratic House could not pass a budget in two years. Filibusters don't happen in the House. Appears the main worry was too much spending.

I guess being a democrat means never having your talking points constrained by the facts. Budget bills only require 50 votes, with the vice president serving as the tie breaker. The "health care reform bill" was sold as a budget bill so it could not be fillibustered. The truth is democrats refused to show us before the election just how irresponsible it is to pass a b udget with a $1.6 TRILLION deficit.

In the budget battle that threatens to shut down government, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has embraced the filibuster as a tool to preserve government funding for Planned Parenthood. This is the same Senator Schumer who, as recently as January, had denounced the filibuster as a tool to "grind the Senate to a halt."
