Safety concerns outweigh cost-savings in plan to de-energize streetlights in Ann Arbor

By Letters to the Editor

Regarding the Oct. 7 article “City officials nix plans to de-energize streetlights,” we want to express our appreciation to Mayor John Hieftje and Councilman Christopher Taylor (D-3rd Ward) for sponsoring the resolution to cancel the shutoff of 17 percent of the city’s streetlights.

As homeowners in the pilot neighborhood, it was important to us to have our concerns acknowledged and we applaud the major and Councilman Taylor for meeting with constituents at 10 at night to walk through our neighborhood to see in person the potential effects and listen to our feedback.

While we certainly appreciate the difficult task of finding broadly acceptable cost-savings measures, we are pleased that concerns about safety outweighed budget considerations in this instance. Tom and Cathy Kerr Ann Arbor
