Should guns be allowed on campus?

By Stefanie Murray

About 100 people gathered at Eastern Michigan University on Thursday for a panel discussion about whether or not guns should be allowed on college campuses.

State lawmakers are considering two bills that would allow students to carry concealed weapons on Michigan’s campuses.

The biggest problem with allowing citizens with CCWs on campus, or anywhere where large crowds assemble is that if Va Tech type issue arises and the police respond and see someone with a gun, they are going to be a suspect and could be shot. Conversely there has been several (at least 4 I have read about) instances where people with CCWs stopped Va Tech type incidents. MI's CCW law included protections for universities. The pending legislation is proper and should be passed.

Wow those numbers seem to speak for themselves. Looks like the vast majority of people support people carrying on campus just like they can in most other parts of the state.

Choice quote from the EMU newspaper on the topic: "Dont assume you are safer in a no-carry zone simply because a sign says no guns allowed. If a sign was all we needed to prevent violence, then how come we dont have more signs?"

a2cents, at 1:00pm, about 50 people had voiced their opinion. Now, around 500 have. The fact is that people educated on the subject of firearms and the effectiveness of restrictions on gun control know that banning law-abiding citizens the right to bear arms does nothing to thwart crime. It simply empowers criminals to have a defenseless population on which to prey.

OR as with any vote, those concerned enough to make their wishes known? Or perhaps further confirmation that Gun Control support is at an all time low. http://www.gallup.com/poll/117361/recent-shootings-gun-control-support-fading.aspx http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2009/10/18/US-Supreme-Court-Gun-control-on-culture-wars-front-burner/UPI-10191255846500/

perhaps a concerted, organized influence at work? The poll was as lopsided in opposition at perhaps 1:00 p.m.
