Should teachers unions reopen their contracts to help balance school budgets?

By Cindy Heflin

Unions representing teachers in Washtenaw County have declined to reopen their contracts to discuss pay cuts or other concessions to help balance school budgets. The unions say community conversations about the future of education in Washtenaw County need to take place before considering pay or benefit cuts for teachers.

Of course the contracts should be re-opened. But the cuts should also be shared with administrative and other areas. Everyone in this economy is being impacted. The unions should not be immune.

Cindy- your poll question does not match the story content. The question is when not if teachers should reopen contract. The poll could say: "Is it reasonable for teachers to wait to reopen contract negotiations until community discussions take place"
