Those who support abortion should accept "pro-abortion" label

Judy McNamara (Nov. 15, Letters) has "never ... heard anyone say they are 'pro-abortion.'" No wonder, for the media always use the more "polite" pro-choice. But Webster defines pro-choice as "favoring legalized abortion," which sounds about as pro-abortion as one can get.

Judy goes on to say that the "right to choose is opposed by the many who choose church dogma over free thought." What is this "free thought" I'm supposed to go for? Is it her thought? What makes that better than the thought of the Creator, "Thou shalt not kill"? Here is a quote to add to Judy's collection: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." --Declaration of Independence I'm with Judy on feeding the hungry, fighting for human rights (including those of the unborn), stopping violence (such as ripping babies apart), and halting child abuse, which definitely includes abortion. Great comment tracyann. I couldn't agree more. There are actually people who sit on waiting lists for years to adopt a baby. This is the main reason people adopt babies from other countries.

I just love when people say, "Have you ever adopted one these unwanted babies being born?" That's always the argument. I'm willing to bet that most abortions are performed on women who got pregnant by "accident". Not rape or incest, though I know it happens. I'm talking the majority. We all know what can happen when one has sex, no matter how careful one may be. It's called accepting responsibility for your actions.

Lucy I assume that you volunteer at shelters for pregnant teens. Or at orphanages. Or at shelters for abused women & children. Or have adopted babies instead of bringing more into the overcrowded world. And why do you assume that everyone is a "Christian"? If you do not believe in abortion, that is perfectly understandable-- don't have one.

An interesting thing is that those who are anti-choice often refer to the number of fetuses that didn't come to term and they assume that many fewer babies are born. Wrong. Sometimes, a baby is born latter BECAUSE that fetus didn't come to term. My mom had a spontaneous abortion (aka miscarriage). It was her second pregnancy and she wanted two children. I'm her second and younger offspring, the result of her third pregnancy. It's something to think about when we hear the anti-choice people assume the number of abortions equals the number of people that weren't born. I was born because my mom had a spontaneous abortion. We can't forget that there are many people on earth that wouldn't be alive today if their mom's hadn't had an abortion (spontaneous or not).

Lucy, I think you have made a fine point! We should be allowed to label people as we see them, not as they see themselves. Why should someone who believes in a smaller government, one that does not interfere with our access to healthcare for example, not be labeled Liberal, or for that matter why should someone who believes in a huge government interference, such as warrantless wiretaps, not be labeled conservative? It only makes sense for us to label individuals so that we know whom we are with and whom we are against. Lets face it, stereotypes save time.

Whether you label abortion as murder or call me pro-abortion does not change a single fact, or make a thing good or bad. Do the words used really matter, except to influence the weak-minded? I think the actual effect of legislation limiting or even outlawing abortion in the U.S. will be that the wealthier still get them, and the poorer get them illegally and less safely. That wins nothing - at least nothing I value.

Lucy, What is your position on the infant mortality rate? Those babies were wanted. Did they have a right to health care? Why are you concerned with a woman who exercises her right to an abortion? It is her right. It is the law. Your "creator" does not add to your argument.

Lucy, We got it, you oppose abortion. Where do you stand on killing doctors or on the death penalty? Does quoting the Declaration of Independence make you feel better?
